Infra Dig – Mitsubishi’s Energy Revolution
The energy revolution is moving at pace, and Mitsubishi Power Europe is right at the vanguard as it supports the transition of natural gas power plants to hydrogen.
IJGlobal editorial director Angus Leslie Melville talks to Javier Cavada – president and chief executive of Mitsubishi Power Europe – to hear how the market is shifting.
This episode runs for 38 minutes and centres on the evolution of methane-fired power plants transitioning to being co-fired by hydrogen, with an eye to them being entirely fuelled by H2.
This latest episode can be accessed on Spotify (embedded above) as well as through Apple Podcasts and on the Amazon service. It is also hosted across a slew of other platforms, open access on all of them.
Mitsubishi Power Europe – the power solutions brand of Japanese parent company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) – is a world leader in developing a wide range of gas turbines (including hydrogen-fuelled gas turbines) that are being used in projects around the world.
It has already validated 30% and 50% co-firing for large frame gas turbines and demonstrated the technology for gas turbines to run on 100% hydrogen.
In this latest podcast, Javier (pictured right) says: “Every time that we decide to electrify something that is not powered by electricity today… you need a lot more electricity.
“We have decided that we are developing the storage of data and AI. We are developing new machine learning computer applications that require incredible amounts of electricity – just to store, not even to transmit or move, just to store it. This involves enormous amounts of cooling.
“We, as Mitsubishi Power, are in all those sectors. We are the Number 1 market leader in gas turbines which we are very proud of as our turbines are enabling grids to reduce emissions between 50% and 65%.”
Tune in to the latest episode to hear a lot more about the integration of hydrogen into the energy mix and to learn more about the role MHI is playing in making this a reality.
