IJInvestor Awards 2024 – Newcomer of the Year, Americas

Sandbrook Capital has been awarded Newcomer of the Year in the Americas, with judges saying they have had a detailed, thorough and measurable impact.

Stamford, Connecticut-based Sandbrook was established to tackle one of the most pressing issues of our time — climate change.

The firm said that while there is abundant capital supporting new cleantech development, much of the impact in the near future will come from deploying proven technologies at scale. Few firms specialize in helping entrepreneurs deploy these technologies while managing development, financing, commercialization, and operations risks.

Sandbrook launched its first fund in late 2021, with a target of $1 billion. By the end of 2023, in the midst of an adverse fundraising context, the firm had hit its hard cap of $1.5 billion and additionally raised over $600 million in side-car vehicles.

Despite a challenging fundraising environment, the firm successfully raised over $2 billion for a first-time fund from top-tier institutional investors across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia. This accomplishment highlights Sandbrook’s ability to attract high-caliber LPs even in adverse conditions, positioning the Firm as a trusted partner in the energy transition space.

Sandbrook was founded by Marti and founding partners Carl Williams, Christopher Hunt, Germán Cueva, and Kenneth Ryan. At Riverstone, the 5 headed up the power and renewables business, as well as its Latin America business and LP relations function.

The strategy rests on Sandbrook’s definition of “climate infrastructure”, which encompasses business defined by long-term cashflows – the conventional understanding of an infrastructure asset – and alignment with the transition to net zero. This spans not just the generation infrastructure needed to decarbonise the energy system, but the equipment, technology, and services required to make that infrastructure work efficiently.

Sandbrook has made 4 investments through the fund to date:

  • Havfram AS – November 2022, $250 million in equity capital
  • launch of Voltwise Power – June 2023
  • acquisition of NeXtWind– August 2023, $750 million
  • rPlus Energies – February (2024), $460 million platform-level partnership
