In this latest Infra Dig podcast, IJGlobal editorial director Angus Leslie Melville talks to Olivier Mussat – chief executive of ATOME – about a pathfinder project in a Core+ infrastructure sector that’s going to be Core in the blink of an eye.

In this episode, Olivier talks about his company – ATOME – a UK-listed chemicals company that is spearheading the green fertiliser revolution with its Villeta Project in Paraguay, a project that features regularly in IJGlobal news pages (latest story).

Villeta Project provides an excellent example of how hydrogen is being deployed to create fertiliser and start the process to decarbonise this $200 billion sector that looks set to shift away from “grey fertiliser”.

“What do you do to make the green hydrogen story successful? It was very much an infrastructure story, combined with a market story – where you have the right infrastructure and the right type of power available – but also the right market,” says Olivier.

“When we looked at hydrogen, you realise that most of it is used in the industrial sector… so chemicals, especially, and refineries. Refineries is one aspect, but what about the rest?

“You soon realise that with hydrogen, you make ammonia. And from a market point of view, you realise that 80% of all ammonia is used for fertiliser. So, for us, it was very clear that the successful story for hydrogen will be in fertiliser.

“It has both an energy security aspect and of course – very importantly – a food security aspect attached to it.”
