IJGlobal ESG Awards 2020 – deals shortlist


IJGlobal is delighted today to be announcing the shortlisted transactions for our inaugural ESG Awards to recognise developments in the last financial year – April 2020 through March 2021.

All categories were debated openly by the independent panel of judges and secretly voted on during Judgment Day which was held virtually on 18 August.

Here we are publishing the shortlisted transactions which identifies the deals that appear in a shortlist, but omits awards the judges chose not to shortlist but choosing a single winner.

All the winners will be revealed at the IJGlobal ESG Awards 2020 night – which is to be staged at a physical event in London on 21 October – when a total of 20 trophies will be presented.

Deal of the Year Energy – Americas:

  • Jacaranda – solar plant in Brazil with an impressive social impact
  • UEP Penomene II – first green bond issued by a renewables portfolio under a PF structure in LatAm and first private sector green bond offering in Central America and Caribbean
  • Enbridge Sustainability Linked Loan – first Canadian energy infra company to execute an SLL with a new 3-year revolving credit facility

Deal of the Year Energy – Europe:

  • CDPQ’s Velto Renewables – entering southern European renewables market with ambitious plans afoot
  • Fécamp Offshore Wind Farm – a market defining transaction in this space for France
  • Northvolt – Europe's biggest lithium-ion battery plant being constructed in Sweden
  • San Serván – green loan: the first Climate Bond Certified green transaction in Spain

Deal of the Year Energy – APAC & Africa: 

  • African Development Bank & Nedbank – sustainable development goals-linked bonds
  • Development Bank of Southern Africa – issue of its first green bonds through AFD
  • Nur Navoi Solar Project – landmark deal setting benchmark for rapid decarbonisation of the Uzbek power sector

Social Infrastructure ESG Award:

  • Hippocrates – Antin-led healthcare deal in Greece
  • Maldini – Niguarda Hospital in Milan – Vauban’s Italian healthcare investment
  • Prince George's County Education & Community Partners – pathfinder education deal in Maryland, US

Transport ESG Award:

  • CNG Foresight – biomethane refuelling infrastructure in the UK
  • Project Condor (AMP / Enel X) – electric buses in Chile
  • Sydney Airport US Private Placement Sustainability Linked Bond – market-leading 20-year sustainability linked bond

Deal of the Year – Infrastructure:

  • Project Blaise – Zenobē investment into battery storage and fleet electrification in the UK
  • Miya – water efficiency
  • Vauban Infra Fibre – massive deployment of fibre in France
  • Sydney Airport US Private Placement Sustainability Linked Bond – market-leading 20-year sustainability linked bond
