Ethiopia to launch 17 energy and road PPPs
Ethiopia’s Office of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has announced that up to $6.5 billion of energy and road projects will be launched as PPPs by July 2019.
Teshome Tafese, director general of the PPP Office, said that a total of 17 projects – comprising 14 power developments and three roads – will be put out to tender within this fiscal year, which in Ethiopia runs from July 2018 to July 2019.
The planned power projects – and their expected cost – are:
- 798MW Dabus – $984 million
- 469MW Genale Daw 5 – $793 million
- 424MW Halele Werabe – $1.2 billion
- 280MW Chemoga 1&2 – $729 million
- 150MW Weranso – $165 million
- 150MW Wolenchiti – $165 million
- 125MW Dichato – $150 million
- 125MW Gad – $150 million
- 125MW Hurso – $150 million
- 125MW Metema – $150 million
- 100MW Genale 6 – $387 million
- 100MW Humera – $120 million
- 100MW Mekelle – $120 million
At least six of these projects are confirmed to be solar farms.
Meanwhile, the road projects are:
- 160km Mieso Dire Dawa motorway – $445 million
- 125km Adama Awash motorway – $440 million
- 72km Awash Mieso motorway – $230 million
The new roads are expected to improve transport links between the capital city Addis Ababa and a port in neighbouring Dijbouti, as well as a new port under development in Somalia.
